N63 valve stem seals (oil burning / blue smoke): what owners actually paid
N63 / N63TU (4.4L twin-turbo V8)
Fair-price range (from sourced prices)
How this is derived: the middle 50% (25th–75th percentile) of the USD prices in the table below for that shop type, using full-job totals only. Labor-only, customer-supplied-parts, warranty cost-share, bundled-extra-work and non-USD prices are shown but excluded. A range is only published with at least 3 usable prices. Scope differs between quotes, so read the notes.

Labor rates: national medians of 12 reported BMW dealer rates ($255/hr) and 11 independent BMW-shop rates ($175/hr).
How these estimates work
Dealers look up BMW's own warranty labor time for the job, then for customer-pay work most multiply it by about 1.5 to 2, and charge their hourly rate. Genuine BMW parts are typically marked up 20–40% over BMW list price. So: warranty hours × 1.5–2 × local dealer rate + (genuine list price × 1.2–1.4). (source, source)
Independent shops usually quote straight from a commercial labor guide (Mitchell or ALLDATA), with no multiplier. So: labor-guide hours × local independent rate + parts.
Local rates come from labor rates people have reported for BMW dealers and BMW indie shops in your area. Where we have no report, the national median is scaled by how much auto technicians earn in your state or metro (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, May 2025). Those rates are marked "estimated." Tax, shop fees, fluids and diagnosis aren't included.
BMW warranty time: 39.8 hrs — BMW warranty labor time: both cylinder heads R&R 30.8 hrs + valve stem seals 4.5 hrs per bank × 2 = 39.8 hrs
Labor-guide time (guide not named): 30–40 hrs — Forum-cited 30–40 hrs ('30 hour book time' / '40+ hour job'; guide not named); (Xbimmers)
Dealer parts list basis: Genuine: valve seal kit 11340054492 × 2 ($94.99 ea, Turner) = $190 + head bolt set 11127582454 × 2 ($124.99 MSRP ea) = $250 + cylinder head gasket set 11127583203 × 2 (listed at 383.88 ea by a genuine-parts store; assumed to include the head gasket) = $768 → ~$1,208; markup 1.2–1.4× (Typical BMW dealer parts markup of 20–40% over list).
Parts: Genuine valve seal kit 11340054492 $94.99 (Turner); Genuine head bolt set 11127582454 MSRP $124.99 (Turner; Victor Reinz $46.99); Genuine head gasket set 11127583203 383.88 (eStore-Central); Genuine head gasket pair $419.99 (5150 AutoSport).
Dealer basis is the heads-off method (BMW warranty labor time 39.8 hrs incl. both head R&Rs). Indie hours are forum-cited (estimate). Some independents use an in-car seal tool that avoids pulling the heads; their quotes ($3,300–$4,900 in the sources above) run well below this estimate. On very large jobs like this, dealers sometimes adjust pricing case by case.
Symptoms
- Blue smoke from the exhaust after idling, then accelerating
- Oil consumption of a quart every few hundred to ~1,000 miles
- Oily spark plugs / misfires
- Failed smog (visible smoke)
Affected models & years
2009–2018 550i/550i GT, 650i, 750i/750Li, X5 xDrive50i (E70/F15), X6 xDrive50i (E71/F16). Original N63 most affected.
Rule out cracked crankcase-vent (PCV) hoses and turbo seals first. Dealers usually drop the engine; some independents use an in-car tool kit, which is why indie quotes are much lower. BMW's N63 customer care / class-action settlement covered many cars; check eligibility before paying.
Published estimate (not a paid price): Munich Motorsport (Atlanta BMW specialist) advertises N63 valve stem seals at $4,900 (regularly $5,900) and says dealers charge upwards of $9,000. source
Published estimate (not a paid price): An Atlanta shop advertised a complete N63 valve stem seal job for $3,500 parts and labor (BimmerFest ad, ~2019). source
